Every Bizzomate spends 10% of his working hours on what we call CSR: Corporate Social Responsibility. We are not just doing this for our marketing purposes. We like to pay attention to it in hopes to inspire and spread the idea that each and every one can contribute to this world in his or her own way.
In this blog, Aswin van Braam, will share his thoughts on this. He is a consultant and is responsible for managing all of our CSR activities.
Reducing loneliness by socializing
Since one-and-a-half year I am a buddy of a psychiatric patient, on behalf of “Stichting Horizon“. Once every two weeks the two of us will do a simple, but fun, social activity. By doing this, he feels less lonely and participates better in our society. Our contact is not only helpful to him, as it gives me a completely different perspective on our world.
My buddy loves to wander through nature with me and my dog in the surroundings of Maastricht, and 1 or 2 times a month, I am taking him to a home game of local football club MVV Maastricht. This sounds great, but it is not always fun.
Ups and downs
Last year, he had several ups and downs. These fluctuations have a huge influence on his state of mind and therefore, he had to take medication.
Every time we hang out, I have to wait and see “how” he is. Any unexpected change in his environment can result in a rage. Once, he went completely mad because the TV was not connected in the way he wanted, and when it appeared that the correct cable was missing, it resulted in a rage.
Luckily, I was with him that day. I stayed calm and used my father-skills, that’s how I was able to avert this crisis. Due to his disorder(s) he behaves and sees the world in the same way as my 5-year old son does.
Fortunately enjoying as crazy
He can also enjoy a wonderful football game intensely and at such a moment, he forgets about his disorders.
Sometimes he asks me whether he is crazy, and every single time I tell him: “Oh well, we are all a little crazy, aren’t we? Who knows, maybe you are normal and we are the crazy ones.” And each and every time you can see him glance.
Not everyone can become a buddy. That is why every employee can think of an own CSR activity. You should do something that fits you and if you want to do it, do it with a lot of passion and pleasure.
